Urgam Valley & Kalpeshwar Mahadev Temple

About This Adventure

Location: Urgam village, Chamoli district, Uttarakhand. 30 km from Joshimath on the Rishikesh-Badrinath road, diverting from Helang.

Elevation: 2,200m (7,217 ft)

Kalpeshwar Temple:
– Dedicated to Lord Shiva. One of the Panch Kedar temples. The other four are Kedarnath, Rudranath, Tungnath, Madhyamaheshwar — all in Kedar Khand, Garhwal Himalayas.
– At Kalpeshwar, Shiva’s matted tresses (Jata) are worshipped. The temple is approached through a cave passage.
– It is the only Panch Kedar temple accessible throughout the year.
– Trek is now only 300 meters from Devgram village. Earlier it was 12 km from Helang.

About Urgam Valley:
– A peaceful, less-touristy Himalayan valley with terraced fields, apple orchards, waterfalls and dense forest.
– The valley also has Dhyan Badri temple (one of Sapta Badri) and the ancient Kalpavriksha tree.
– Famous as a base for Rudranath trek.

Best time to visit: March to June and September to November.
